The Pacific Island Ambassadors met with members of the Japan-PIC Friendship League on the 22nd April 2021 at the Diet Building in Tokyo. The meeting was to discuss and exchange views on issues pertinent to the Pacific including the PALM9 and related areas. The Pacific Island Countries (PIC) were represented by Ambassadors from FSM, Fiji, Palau, Samoa, Tonga and Charge d’affaires from PNG. The Japan-PIC Friendship League were represented by the Chairman, Hon. Furuya; the Chairs of each Pacific Island Country’s parliamentary league. Other participants included representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Japan Post and Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication as well as representatives from Mie Prefecture.
The meeting discussed issues pertaining to the upcoming PALM9 Leaders Summit in June 2021; the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, support for Japan’s candidate to the Universal Postal Union and issues surrounding the Discharge of the ALPS Treated Water from the Fukushima Power Station into the ocean.
